Professor, who Jailed for mocking Mamta, would contest Bengal Elections

Professor from Jadavpur University, who was jailed due to lampooning Mamata Banerjee’s cartoons and emailing them, has decided to contest as an independent candidate for the upcoming elections in Bengal.

In Kolkata, Ambikesh Mahapatra will contest from East of Behala,his main opponent is Mayor Sovan Chatterjee in Kolkata.Neither Congress nor Left has fielded a candidate yet there.

Aakranta Aamaraa’ is the platform, Mahapatra belongs to this platform,also known as ‘we the attacked’ belongs to the group of people who had suffered the attacks of Mamata Banerjee in Bengal.

In Howrah, Mrs Pratima Dutta member of the same group is also going to contest from Domjur constituency in Howrah.

Many people have suffered at the hands of this government. Democracy has suffered. We want to fight as the people’s representatives and dislodge this government,” Professor Mahapatra said at a press conference in Kolkata

Father of the late Barun Biswas of Sutia whose son was shot dead in July 2012 allegedly by henchmen of a criminal gang who were jailed for various gang rapes after the protest which was headed by Barun Biswas was also present at the press conference, among the others.

“I have not yet decided whether to fight the elections,” Jagadish Biswas said. “But I may for justice for my son and the people.”

Ashok Ganguly, Retired Supreme Court judge,he is related with the group but not member was also present during the meeting.He went into trouble when he was the chief of the State Human Rights Commission with Mamata Banerjee.But he did not approved for contesting the elections even after contesting for so many times.

“I am not in the electoral battlefield. But I am in the people’s fight to restore democracy that the ruling party in Bengal has snatched away,” Justice Ganguly said.

In April 2012, Mahapatra was jailed and arrested for emailing the cartoons that were mocking Mamata Banerjee. In Howrah, in Bali a TMC leader Tapan Dutta, Pratima Gupta’s husband was killed in May 2011 by people from the ruling party.

In Bengal ,it was claimed by the platform that democracy has been destroyed by government of Mamata Banerjee.

Neither of any opposition parties for the 2 seats have named the candidates and will step aside if Congress or Left are contesting for their “field candidates”said by Mahapatra and Dutt in order to ensure the votes don’t get divided.
