Tarun Gogoi is an indian politician since 2001, he is serving as the Assam’s Chief Minister. He is a member of the Indian National Congress and in Assam his party had led to 3 consecutive victories.

On 18 May 2015,  as Chief Minister of Assam, he completed his 14 consecutive years.

Early life

On 11 October, 1934 Tarun Gogoi was born into an ethnic Assamese Tai-Ahom family at Rangajan Tea Estate, former Sivasagar District, now the Jorhat District of Assam.

Dr Kamaleshwar Gogoi, his father was a medical practitioner at Rangajan Tea Estate. Usha Gogoi, his mother younger sister of the renowned poet Ganesh Gogoi, and was s known for her collection of poetry, Hiyar Samahar (Heart’s Treasures).

Personal life

On 30 July 1972, Tarun Gogoi married Dolly Gogoi. From Gauhati University, Dolly Gogoi is a post-graduated in Zoology. His daughter is an MBA and on, Gaurav Gogoi is a member of parliament  from Kaliabar, who holds a degree in Public Administration from New York University.

Political career

From Lok Sabha, Gogoi served 6 terms as Member of Parliament. In 1971-85, he first represented in Jorhat. He was elected from Kalibor (1991–96/1998–2002). Gaurav Gogoi, is currently holding the seat of Kalibar.

Tarun Gogoi was elected as the  Joint Secretary of  All India Congress Committee (AICC) with national stature in 1976 under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Later he served as the General Secretary of the AICC (1985–90) under Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.

In (1991–96) He served in the Union Cabinet of India under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao  as Union Minister of State in the Food and Food Processing Industry departments (1991–96).
