In Punjab, Senior Congress Leaders are in Race for Rajya Sabha nominations.

For the race of Rajya Sabha seat “as the term of five members of the Upper House of Parliament from Punjab comes to an end in April”, In Congress the ‘frontrunners’ are , Lal Singh ,senior vice-president, Partap Singh Bajwa ,Former Punjab Congress president, and former CLP leader,Sunil Kumar Jakha.

March 21 is the election date for the seats.

In Rajya Sabha, 7 members are there from Punjab.

In April, for 5 seats are ‘up for grabs’ 3 will go Bhartiya Janta Party and SAD alliance and remaining 2 will go with Congress. In state Assembly, the seat number is decided on the basis of the majority of the legislators of the party.

Avinash Rai Khanna from BJP, Manohar Singh, Ashwani Kumar both from Congress and Naresh Gujral, Sukhdev Singh both from Akali Dal are the MPs whose terms of action are coming to an end.

Bhartiya Janta Party and SAD are expected to nominate again ‘the sitting members’, from Delhi few leaders are ‘lobbying’on in the Congress which includes Manish Tewari and Kapil Sibal that are very much interested in for the posts.

“Congress is unlikely to renominate either of its sitting MP,” sources told The Indian Express.

Dr Raj Kumar Verka, chairperson of Commission for STs and SCs; MLA of the party and Mohinder Singh Kaypee,M.P are supposed to be very much interested.

After being removed from the post of the president of the party, Mr.Bajwa was not given any assignment, ‘seems a natural claimant’.

Bajwa enjoys a direct line with him’ a loyalist of Rahul Gandhi president of Congress.

Bajwa denied lobbying for the berth. “I want to contest from Qadian. I am nurturing my constituency.” he said.

In the Assembly elections, for the Rajya Sabha seat Lal Singh can be interested as he wants to reserve a seat for his grandson in Sanaur. Capt Amarinder Singh with PPCC chief “having taken a tough stance against dynasty politics, this could be difficult.”

In order to ignore ‘another by election’ party may want him from the assembly to resign.

Both Lal Singh and Jakhar said that in Rajya Sabha, they haven’t thought about any seat.

In June, terms of Balwinder Singh Bhunder MP, SAD and Ambika Soni MP Congress going to end. Ambika Soni, MP Congress may get another term as she is quite close to Sonia Gandhi Congress President.

Punjab Pradesh Congress president, Capt Amarinder Singh said the claimants would be decided by the high command and that he would not play any role in it.

March 21 elections

On March 21, the elections for the 5 seats for Rajya Sabha from Punjab that are vacant on April 9 are announced by the he Election Commission of India.

On March 4th, Official notification for the elections is issued and March 11 for filling nominations is last date said by V K Singh, Punjab, and Chief Electoral Officer.

On March 12 analysis of nominations will take place and March 14 is the last date for withdrawing candidates. On March 21 from 9 am to 4 pm polling will take place. From 5 pm same day the counting will take place.

Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Secretary, will be filling the papers of nomination who’s also Returning officer for the Rajya Sabha election.

For membership of Rajya Sabha , as an elector, a candidate should register himself/herself for any parliamentary constituency in India.
