2017 assembly elections may turn into a contest between Congress and Aam Aadmi Party “with the Akali Dal and Bhartiya Janta Party remaining on the fringes only.”

He also ruled out forming a separate party, while asking, “do you think with all this love, respect and support of MLAs, Congress workers and leaders and also the general public I should be leaving my party and leaving everything behind?”

He further added that in Punjab Congress continued to be strongest party in terms of ‘public support’ and ‘mass base’.

“It (2017 polls) is going to be contest between AAP and Congress with SAD-BJP combine remaining on the fringes only,” the former Chief Minister said.

Amarinder singh further added that in Punjab Bharitya Janta Party remain “inconsequential” and in Nadir had touched Akali reputation.

Congress had lost in 2007 and 2012 assembly polls merely by only 1 per cent of the votes against Akali and Bhartiya Janta Party combined.

Among the people particularly the youngsters, about Badals and Akalis,do not even want to like to talk about and In Punjab before the people the only reasonable option was Congress.

Except for Sucha Singh Chhotepur, Aam Aadmi Party does not have any leadership which is experienced but they have ‘commanding appeal among the section of youth.

“On Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s reported charges that the Congress had betrayed and let down Akali stalwart late Harchand Singh Longowal, Amarinder retorted, “Let me ask Badal as who betrayed him and who backed out of the accord which Sant Longowal signed with Rajiv Gandhi (the then Prime Minister)”.

Sant Longowal was “betrayed and backstabbed” and “he had to pay with his life” by Gurcharan Singh Tohra late SGPC head and Badal said by Amarinder Singh.
