Election Commission Announces Schedule For Assembly Elections In 5 States

Election commission, on Wednesday, announced the complete schedule of upcoming Assembly elections in 5 states. Five poll-bound states where people will exercise their franchise are Manipur, Goa, Uttarakhand, Punjab and the most popular political battleground nowadays, Uttar Pradesh.

Though, these elections are equally important for all the political outfits, BJP led NDA seems more nervous as it may reflect people’s perception post-demonetization.

Following are the key highlights of the Election commission’s briefings:

 Polling will be held in 7 phases as per following schedule:

–Phase I, 73 constituencies

Date of notification: January 17;

Last date for filing nomination: January 24;

Scrutiny of nomination: by January 25;

Last date of Withdrawal: by January 27,

Date of polling: February 11

— Phase II, 67 constituencies

Date of notification: January 20;

Last date for filing nomination: January 27;

Scrutiny of nomination: by January 28;

Last date of Withdrawal:  by January 30,

Date of polling: February 15

 —Phase III, 69 constituencies

 Date of notification: January 24;

Last date for filing nomination: January 31;

Scrutiny of nomination: by February 2;

Last date of Withdrawal by February 4,

Date of polling: February 19

–Phase IV, 53 constituencies

Date of notification: January 30;

Last date for filing nomination: February 6;

Scrutiny of nomination: by February 7;

Last date of Withdrawal: by February 9,

Date of polling: February 23

–Phase V, 52 constituencies

Date of notification: February 2;

Last date for filing nomination: February 9;

Scrutiny of nomination: by February 11;

Last date of withdrawal: by February 13,

Date of polling: February 27.

 — Phase VI, 49 constituencies

Date of notification: February 8;

Last date for filing nomination: February 15;

Scrutiny of nomination:  by February 16;

Last date of withdrawal by February 18,

Date of polling: March 4

Phase VII, 40 constituencies

Date of notification: February 11;

Last date for filing nomination: February 18;

Scrutiny of nomination:  by February 20;

Last date of withdrawal: by February 22,

Date of polling: March 8

  In UP, elections will be taken place in seven phases between February 11 and March 8

  • Manipur to go for polls in two phases while Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa will have single-phase polls
  • Counting of votes for all five states to begin on Mach 11 and results will be declared by the same day.
  • Commission is mulling on reducing limit of anonymous donations to Rs 2000 only and is considering if they can switch to digital payments.
  • The commission warns political parties and individual against asking for votes in name of religions. It will be deemed to be a corrupt practice.
  • Decision on Samajwadi Party’s election symbol will be based on rules and precedent
  • Counting of votes will be held on March 11
  • In UP polling will take place in seven phases- 11 Feb, 15 Feb, 19 Feb, 23 Feb, 27 Feb, 4 March and 8 March
  • In Manipur, polling will be held in two phases – 4 March and 8 March
  • In Uttarakhand, polling will be held on 15 Feb
  • Punjab will go to polls on 4 February
  • Goa will go to polls on 4 February
