Priyanka Gandhi’s visit to the residence of Ghulam Nabi Azad, senior Congress leader, their one hour long discussions, have revived the speculation about Priyanka’s role in the Congress campaign in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections that are due early next year.
Azad is the Congress leader in charge of UP.
Priyanka Gandhi’s lead role is in the rumour so far because she is Sonia Gandhi, Congress president’s daughter and this time will campaign beyond parliamentary constituencies of her mother and brother, Rahul Gandhi, who is the party’s vice president.
According to the Sources, Priyanka Gandhi is expected to lead rallies across Uttar Pradesh.
Uttar Pradesh’s election is “a high-stakes contest” and the result is considered as a “key indicator” for the parties, how they could work in the 2019 national elections.
Congress wants to lift itself out of a “political low” in Uttar Pradesh and has taken help of Prashant Kishor, master election strategist, who is credited of winning campaigns for Narendra Modi, Prime Minister in the 2014 national election and in state elections for Nitish Kumar last year.
BJP alleged that if Priyanka Gandhi’s gets appointed to lead the UP’s campaign, Congress will admit that Rahul is not a ‘match winner’.
In 2014 national election, Rahul Gandhi had led the campaign of Congress, which saw in the Parliament, Congress moving to its lowest tally ever. In many elections of the state that were held after that, Congress has given its control to BJP and its allies.
