Rahul Gandhi met Dalits’ family members, who were “thrashed for skinning a dead cow” and ensured all possible help to the victims.
As per victims’s kin, Rahul Gandhi had spent 40 minutes with the family members of the victims and said “he is ashamed that such incidents are taking place in India.”
Kumari Selja and Gurudas Kamat, Congress leaders, accompanied him, also had tea with victims’ family members in remote village near Una town of Gir-Somnath district, where this incident took place on July 11.
Jitu Sarvaiya, a cousin of the victims said that he narrated to Rahul Gandhi what had happened with his cousins and uncle. Rahul listened to him patiently and ensured all help so that they can get justice.
“Rahulji said he feels ashamed that such incidents are still taking place in the country and gave his personal number to us to contact in case of any emergency,” he said.
Rahul Gandhi met Balubhai Sarvaiya and his family members, after reaching at the nearby Union Territory of Diu. In this incident, seven family members of Balubhai including him were beaten up.
Jitu added that Rahul Gandhi also asked questions about the issues and discrimination being faced by them in the village. He told him that there is still practice of untouchability and are made to stand away from others.
“We demanded from him that those who were involved in the incident should be given exemplary punishment and kept behind bars for their entire life or else they will once again do this to someone else,” he said.
He added that they told Rahul Gandhi about police whose not helping them when cow activists were beating his cousin brothers.
“We also told him that after the brutal beating for skinning of dead cows. Our family has decided to leave this business of leather….we will work as labourers but never get involved in this traditional business of ours,” Jitu said.
Jitu added that he also had asked financial help, described conditions of the poor, education for his village people so that in future they can stand on their own.
