West Bengal people share their cultural heritage with Bangladesh. Different traditions of the state are based on the Bengali culture , Hindu epics and Puranas. In the early 20th century, Rabindranath Tagore became the key figure of the Bengali culture. Rabindranath Tagore influence is still there in West Bengal .
During the early 20th century, movies were important part of the Bengali culture. These movies reached a new height with introduction of the legends like Satyajit Ray and others.
Crafts in West Bengal
West Bengal is well known for its handlooms, textiles, Murshidabad and Baluchari’s silk sarees etc. Cane and bamboo work are well known too . Various kinds of leather items, clay toys, masks are made in West Bengal. Chhau and Rabindra Nrithya are some of the famous dances in the region.
Festivals in West Bengal
Durga Puja is celebrated in West Bengal on a grand level . Diwali is also celebrated grandly . Other festivals like Id-Ul-Fitr, Sivaratri, Lakshmi puja are also celebrated in West Bengal.
Traditions Of West Bengal
Serving food on the floor is the traditional way of West Bengal, individual pieces of carpet, called asans, are spread for each person to sit on. A large platter in front of the seat is placed, which is made of bell metal/steel or on a large piece of fresh cut banana leaf.
In evening time only, marriage is conducted , in the presence of a priest, at the house of the bride.
“Dodhi Mangal” and “Gaaye halud” (turmeric bath) , these ceremonies are held on the wedding day in both the houses,early morning, before sunrise. Wedding place is decorated with attractive patterns(alpona) made out of rice paste with water.
Clothes in West Bengal
In the urban areas ,Men wear shirt and pant, or Denims and T-shirt . Women wear sari or denims and T-shirt in urban areas .In the rural areas, Men wear shirt, T-shirt and pant or lungi .Women wear Sari or jeans and top.In West Bengal, girls do not wear orna(a thin and long cloth) in urban as well as rural areas. Some girls use orna but around neck like a fashion statement.
